New residential and public space project under construction

REP, a major rehabilitation and extension of a building on Liston’s dynamic Rua da Escola Politécnica is officially under construction! The total 1035 m2 (11,140 ft2) project includes a 1-story addition, repositioning the street-facing commercial space as an antique shop, and turning the back of the building into a public patio, an inviting outdoor living space. 

Convivium: New European Bauhaus (NEB) Solutions in Food, Living Heritage and Convivilaity

Beginning in 2024 and expanding into a report in 2025, Atelier Sérgio Rebelo is part of a multidisciplinary team in connection with the University of Coimbra and Pantheon Sorbonne, Université de Paris. We are prioritizing food heritage and culture as part of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) to research and propose solutions for food, living heritage and conviviality. Sérgio's focus within the program is on sustainable tourism, building on ASR's growing body of work in Portugal's historic wine region and urban contexts.

Collaborators are from diverse countries such as Portugal, Norway, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Poland which include Asociación Campo Adentro (INLAND) Centre for Agrarian History (CAG), Circular Ways AS (CW), Coimbra Municipality, Destination Lofoten AS, Dnarb Agency SL (WePlan), European Institute for the History and Culture of Food (IEHCA), Institut LYFE, Lofoten Regional Council / Lofoten The Green Islands, Memoar Oslo / SLAESH (MO), Museum Nord (FMN), Nieuwe Instituut (NI), Nord University (NORD), Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet), University of Gdansk (UG), University of Utrecht (UU).

Quinta de Adorigo Hotel takes shape

The new 3,200 m2 (34,400 ft2) hotel at Quinta de Adorigo - our first hospitality project - is well into construction and set for completion in 2027. In conversation with the winery's sinuous form and the contour of the landscape, the architecture provides spots for immersion and contemplation, while inviting movement towards discovery and closeness.

Quinta de Adorigo Winery nominated for the EUmies Awards 2026

Since 1987, the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award has been awarded to acknowledge and reward quality architectural production in Europe. Organized by the European Union and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe in Barcelona, ASR is joined by 11 other nominees in Portugal and 410 total nominees across 40 countries, marking one of the most prominent awards to win in Europe and globally.

Forbes highlights the design principles of Quinta de Adorigo Winery

The business-oriented global publication profiles the architecture of several wineries, including Quinta de Adorigo, in the Douro Valley, a listed UNESCO World Heritage site. Focusing on sustainability and landscape, ASR’s use of wood and design is described as helping “to reduce the building’s C02 emissions while replicating the natural palette of the valley’s ecosystems.”

Hospitality Project of the Year

Quinta de Adorigo Winery was crowned Hospitality Project of the Year at the Dezeen Awards 2025 party on the evening of November 25, 2025 in London. Marking the project’s second major international award this month, ASR is among sixteen other architecture category winners located in 15 different countries.

Wood Central features Quinta de Adorigo Winery

Australia’s first and only dedicated platform covering wood-based media covers ASR’s award-winning design. Speaking exclusively to Wood Central, Mark Thomson, chair of a judging panel at the World Architectural Festival 2025, called the timber roof “masterfully conceived as the primary architectural feature of this functional rural building, in a UNESCO region of Portugal.”

Atelier Sérgio Rebelo’s first major hospitality building, Quinta de Adorigo Winery, wins top prizes in two 2025 WAF Award categories: Production, Energy & Logistics and Best Use of Timber. The project, also highly commended for the Best Use of Light, impressed juror for connecting interior and exterior spaces, using light effectively, and showing strong conceptual clarity.

Quinta de Adorigo Winery shortlists in Dezeen Awards 2025

In a recent interview about the site-specific design, architect Sérgio Rebelo said, “We studied many iterations until we found something that just seemed natural and as though it was always there.” Initiated in 2019 and completed in 2025, the 4200 m2 (45,000 ft2) Quinta de Adorigo Winery the first building completed as part of a multi-use winery estate, set for completion in December 2026.
