Architecture is an evolving discipline—a continuous layering of intentions. The rehabilitation of the DOC restaurant at Cais da Folgosa represents a surgical intervention upon a pre-existing structure built over the riverbed of the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Positioned at the threshold where land and water meet, the project balances the high-performance technical demands of a fine-dining establishment with respect for the historical and natural landscape. Through a series of adjustments, we stabilized and extended what was already there, ensuring the building evolves while keeping its structural memory.
The core of the intervention relies on an "invisible" eastward expansion shielded by existing granite walls, allowing the building to grow without altering its original horizontal silhouette. By preserving the original steel framework and the logic of the driven foundation piles, the design minimizes environmental interference with the river. The external materiality is a deliberate dialogue with the territory: textured green tiles line the North and East facades to capture the shifting light of the water and vegetation, while the South and West faces retain their original granite stone. Under a unified cover of a matte zinc roof and dark gray aluminum, the old and new elements are seamlessly bound together.
Inside, the transition shifts from industrial precision to a protective shell of comfort, defined by the warmth of oak and sucupira wood in a subtle nod to nautical interiors. All modern climate, hydraulic, and energy systems are woven invisibly into the building's anatomy, leaving the visual clarity of the space uncompromised.
The kitchen is no longer a hidden service, but a point of visual clarity, present from every corner in the restaurant. Every movement within the space—from the wine cellar to the dining tables—is oriented toward the river. The building does not simply look at the landscape; it is immersed in it. By opening the views and refining the flow, the project brings to DOC its paramount function: to be a platform for the Douro.
